National Library creates reading awareness in Kwara community

1 The National Library of Nigeria (NLN) Monday conducted a reading awareness campaign in Ogbondoroko in Asa Local Government Area Kwara.

2 Head of NNL in Kwara, Mrs. Olabimpe Olanisaid that the essence of the program was to awaken the awareness of reading among Nigerians by promoting the availability and use of good reading materials to encourage the culture of reading.

3 She said the 2022 campaign, titled ‘Reading as a panacea to societal problems’, needed to have an impact on indigenous people – ‘the hard to reach’.

4 “So it’s set in the outback where the out-of-school children who was valued at 20 million by UNESCO as well as uneducated adults and internally displaced persons.

5 “We will provide the community with whiteboards, markers, writing materials and basic reading materials to engender basic literacy skills.

6 “It’s time to help our children, adults and excluded to be included,” she said.

seven The Mogaji of Ogbondoroko, Alhaji Ibrahim Ajapesaid the people of the community are lovers of education and happy for the opportunity.

8 “Adult literacy used to exist in the community but was discontinued at some point, but primary and secondary education is still available here.

9 “We are happy that the NLN is coming to relaunch it in the community because it was very useful when it existed.

ten “We are therefore ready to partner with the NLN to revive it using the town hall as the center of the program.

11 “We will also bring our citizens who are scholars to teach them and they will be paid from the community purse.

12 “For primary and secondary education, we are still engaging our children and we have hardly any out-of-school children, enrollment is even ongoing,” Ajape said.

13 He said the community had produced nine professors and 13 university doctors and several Msc and Bsc holders.

14 The traditional leader assured that the community would document its history as well as the achievements of the community, as requested by the NLN.

15 The president of the community, Alhaji Isiaka Aliyupraised the NLN for finding the community worthy of awareness and help.

16 He promised that residents would embrace the idea and not make her regret it later.

17 The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the outreach program is the start of the NLN’s 2022 readership campaign.

18 The campaign continues on Tuesday with a reading contest, spelling bee, quiz, book donation and radio show.
