Diplomatic Quarter: US Embassy Celebrates 80 Years of “Shared History” with Saudi Arabia
RIYADH: The United States Embassy in Riyadh celebrated the 80th anniversary of the establishment of its first diplomatic presence in Saudi Arabia, highlighting what it described as “eight decades of shared history, strong partnership and united vision” with the Kingdom.
The American Legation opened in Jeddah in 1942. Full diplomatic relations began in 1940, and the American Mission, located in a traditional house in the old city center, was elevated to embassy status in 1949.
In 1952, the Embassy moved to the current location of the Consulate General, which at the time was a secluded beachfront property north of the city.
Like all other foreign missions, the United States Embassy was relocated to Riyadh in 1984. The former Embassy complex in Jeddah is now a Consulate General in the heart of one of the fastest growing cities from the Middle-East.
The theme for this year’s celebration was “Shared History, Strong Partnership, and United Vision,” underscoring the enduring foundation of strategic ties and friendship between the United States and Saudi Arabia.
“From the earliest days of modern Saudi Arabia, the United States, its leaders, businesses, and people have supported our Saudi friends on their remarkable journey to success and prosperity,” the U.S. Embassy said. United in Riyadh in a statement to Arab News.
“The US-Saudi relationship has naturally evolved over the years. It has grown to encompass commerce, culture, education, security, and above all the close ties between the Saudi and American peoples. What has not changed over the past 80 years is the shared vision that has always guided U.S.-Saudi cooperation in these and many other areas,” he said. he adds.
“As Saudi Arabia pursues the ambitious goals of Vision 2030, the United States supports the Kingdom’s efforts in the same spirit of partnership that has been a key pillar of U.S.-Saudi relations. Today, in every field, in every sector, Americans and Saudis work together, learn together, conduct research together, and, more recently, perform together in concerts, films, and athletic competitions.
This commitment translates into $54 billion a year in trade and investment between the United States and Saudi Arabia.
American businesses have been an integral part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 economic transformation, while the United States and Saudi Arabia also enjoy strong cultural and educational ties.
